Fluoropolymer coatings suffer no loss of their physical properties at extremely low temperatures, even as low as minus 270°c. There are very few lubricants that will function effectively at such temperatures and most will become solid.
Mechanical properties, such as low friction, dry lubrication and release are not the only properties that are maintained in cryogenic applications. In medical research and development, pathology and even in microscopy, pure fluoropolymer topcoats provide a stable, non-leeching product which provides a highly effective barrier between the processing substance and the coating.
